New Zealand flower delivery really started in the 1990's. Before then there
were just the local florist shops, servicing the suburbs they were located in,
and a international florist network that was expensive and unreliable as far as
flower quality and delivery times or days were concerned.
Many things changed in New Zealand in the 1990's, internet use and the
number of home computers was growing, courier services within New Zealand were
improving at a remarkable rate, and an increasing amount of New Zealanders
were traveling around NZ and the world to work as corporatisation began changing
the way we did business.
A demand began to grow for flower delivery in New Zealand, and internet
based florist shops. In the mid 1990's several businesses started online flower
sales, offering internet based shopping and New Zealand wide flower delivery.
Some of these were just an extension of older florist shops that offered flower
delivery through the old florist network, but a new form of florist was also
entering the market. These were dedicated online florist shops that were
established with the sole purpose of selling flowers over the internet and

from a central florist warehouse.
The advantages to this type of florist operation were many:
- The flowers and the flower delivery was cheaper because the profit
didn't have to be split between the florist taking the order, the florist
delivering the flowers and the owner of the florist network. The same online
florist took the flower order, made up the bouquet, and dispatched the order
for delivery.
- Quality could be assured because the florist only had to stock the
flowers that were contained in the bouquets that were sold on the site. Also
the flowers didn't have to be on display as in a normal florists shop, so
they could be kept in a chiller to ensure their freshness.
- Fast flower delivery throughout New Zealand - These new breed of
florists only sold flowers that were to be delivered so they quickly became
experts shipping flowers throughout NZ. They learnt what couriers offered
the fastest and most efficient service and worked with them to develop new
shipping containers, that protected the flowers in transit and ensured they
arrived at their destination in pristine condition.
With the cheaper, more efficient flower delivery service throughout NZ came a
greater demand. Suddenly people became aware of the relative ease they could
order flowers online, and the superior condition that these flowers were
delivered in, compared with those in the past.
New Zealand flower delivery and
online florists became a booming market helped, also, by the more transient
nature of the modern New Zealander. A son in London cold send flowers to his
mother in Auckland, a boyfriend transferred to Wellington could let his girl in
Christchurch know that he was thinking about her, or a granddaughter at
university in Dunedin could send flowers to Hamilton for her grandmothers
birthday. For occasions that were in the past remembered with a card or small
gift it now became easier to send a bouquet of flower, and so New Zealand flower
delivery continued to grow until today when it is a massive industry and still
growing in leaps and bounds.
